About

The Author: My YA fantasy novel Drift (Tu Books, 2014) is both a Junior Library Guild Selection and a VOYA Top Shelf Honoree. My short fiction appears inOrson Scott Card's Intergalactic Medicine Show, Podcastle, Daily Science Fiction, and elsewhere.  I studied archaeology at BYU, which gave me the opportunity to compile histories from Maya glyphs, excavate in Belize, and work as a faunal analyst. I often draw on my background in archaeology when writing. A long time Idahoan, I now live in Utah with my husband and four kiddos.

The Banner Picture: This is the High Temple at Lamanai, which I visited when I was excavating in Belize.

Re-occurring Blog Articles:

Book and Board Game Match-Up:
I've noticed that there's a nice crossover of book enthusiasts and game board enthusiasts.  That kernel made me think: what board games are like which books?  It'd be nice to have someone say, "If you like Settlers of Catan, you should try reading _____," or "If you loved reading The Hunger Games, you should play _____."

I play a lot of boardgames and read a lot of books.  When I match these up on the blog, I'm not just looking at setting (though that's part of it), but the experience as well -- light, funny books with light, fun games; games that keep me chewing my lip with books brimming with plot turns, etc.  It's an enjoyable mental exercise for me, and hopefully it's entertaining for you!

Fiction Foodie:
I love cooking.  I love books.  Why not combine these things, too?  I enjoyed The Redwall Kitchen as a teenager; surely I could come up with recipes for other books.  Alas, Google informed me that I'm not the first blog to create recipes from a variety of fictional inspirations.  But, I figured I could still bring my own reading and culinary tastes to play.  I've been pretty happy with the results.

Bookshop Talk Reviews:  I also semi-regularly throw book review at Bookshop Talk, an amazing book review site run by Jessica Day George, Amy Finnegan, and Kim Harris Thacker.  The sum of these reviews?  All of these books are fantastic reads.
